re-release! black truffle is honoured to present the premier recordings of two recent works by legendary american experimental composer alvin lucier. a friend and contemporary of pioneers like robert ashley, david behrman, gordon mumma, and christian wolff, lucier has been crafting elegant explorations of the behavior of sound in physical space since the 1960s. lucier is perhaps best known for i am sitting in a room (1970), in which he repeatedly re-recorded his own speaking voice being played back into a room until the room’s resonant frequencies entirely obscure the spoken text. beginning in the early 1970s, he has written a remarkable catalogue of instrumental works that focus on phenomena produced by the interference between closely tuned pitches, such as audible beating, often using pure electronic tones produced by oscillators in combination with single instruments.

madame e. is a musical setting of georges bataille’s “madame edwarda”, a short novel that interlaces themes of eroticism, religiosity and death, and was written under the pseudonym pierre angelique in 1941, during the occupation of paris. composer mirco magnani wrote eleven electronic pieces and presented them to actor/singer ernesto tomasini. they turned them into songs by adding vocal melodies and together they produced a libretto based on bataille’s french text. the result of their dynamic interpretation is a hypnotically spellbinding performance where the audience is transported through worlds – ancient and new – and where tomasini’s haunting falsetto conveys the tormented emotions in bataille’s work and becomes the instrument that articulates the writer’s famously obscure themes.

rhythm büro is a new record label based out of kiev, ukraine started by dj and promoter igor glushko. the büro first began as a local party series organised by igor, alexander pavlenko (aka na nich, widely known in the drum’n’bass world as sunchase) and vera logdanidi (aka vero). since the party’s beginning in march 2015, rhythm büro has hosted such greats as zadig, abdulla rashim, etapp kyle, eric cloutier, woo york, artefakt, acronym, steve bicknell and actress all at different non-club warehouse-like locations around kiev. a peculiar aspect of the rhythm büro team’s objective has been to maintain secrecy about the exact location of the party until a day prior to the event, when ticket buyers are then informed about the location via text message or email. the label was started to be the logical and progressive extension to what rhythm büro has established itself to be locally: one of ukraine’s prominent techno initiatives. for the first release of the label, na nich and vero have contributed two joint-produced tracks that are to become their first publicly available material under their current aliases. while a1 leans itself to the soundscape that is more or less typical for rhythm büro parties: trippy, hypnotic and transportive techno, a2 hits the floor with refreshing zeal, bringing an electro-esque break-beat under deep and emotive synth layers. the b side contains two remixes of the title track, one of which is thoroughly tailored by the dutch-born-berlin-based-duo, artefakt (mostly known for their releases on delsin, prologue and field) as well as a strong and heady remix by semantica records’ mastermind, svreca.

vorab zum album kommt die single put your mask on-als 7inch vinyl und digital. dort wird noch tiefer in akeres zwischenwelt vorgedrungen und es stellt sich heraus, dass akere dort nicht allein sind. neben sarah sulais abstrakten strophen, greift auf dem bonustrack deep waters die münchner sängerin louisa nach dem mikrofon und bereichert die entstehenden bildern mit ihrem ganz eigenen stil. zu beiden songs sind auf der single auch die instrumentals enthalten, denn auch ohne text kann man in diese musikalischen gewässer tief eintauchen.

das 1973 von neu! und clustermitgliedern gegründete trio markierte eine wende im krautrock: weg von der fusionitis, weg vom überambitionierten gegniedel, weg von der ironie, die allzu oft nur lausige fähigkeiten kaschierte. harmonia spielte seine impressionistischen skizzen mit minimalistischem gestus. kein text trübte den sound, alles war repetitiv, friedlich atmosphärisch und irgendwie lofi. brian eno hörte sich so tief rein in diese kitschlosen versponnenheiten, dass er den ambient erfinden konnte. heute, nach 31 jahren, klingt das etwas unfertig, vor allem die ein- und ausstiege, doch der naive charme der musik blieb erhalten. das album bildet den auftakt einer reihe von remasterten neuauflagen legendärer brain-platten. darunter auch ii von cluster. hat eno natürlich auch intensiv gehört.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.
